Antequera is a picturesque and traditional Andalucian town that is steeped in history going back thousands of years. Evidence of its important historical past includes some ancient burial mounds (or "dolmens"), Roman Baths, a Moorish Castle, Gothic churches, Renaissance fountains and Baroque bell towers.

Approaching Antequera from El Chorro along the A23 (approximately an hour's journey) provides a stunning view of the town in the distance: a typical white medieval town with its towers, walls and spires, standing out from the green of the surrounding valley and farmlands. The impressive Moorish fortress provides a dramatic silhouette against the sky.
